In response to the Government\u2019s invitation, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, James Anaya, visited Guatemala from 14 to 18 June 2010 to assess the application of the principles of consultation with the country\u2019s indigenous peoples regarding the extractive industries, particularly the situation of indigenous peoples affected by the Marlin mine in the municipalities of Sipacapa and San Miguel Ixtahuac\u00e1n.<\/p>\n

This document reflects the Special Rapporteur\u2019s preliminary observations on his visit, which were communicated to the Government and the general public at the end of his visit. These preliminary observations will be developed in the Special Rapporteur\u2019s final report to the Human Rights Council, which will include a series of recommendations to the State of Guatemala and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n
