The Special Rapporteur on the situation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, James Anaya, submits to the Human Rights Council the present report on specific cases he has examined concerning alleged violations of the human rights of indigenous peoples in many parts of the world. Since assuming his mandate in May 2008, the Special Rapporteur has placed particular focus on the Human Rights Council\u2019s directive \u201cto gather, request, receive and exchange information and communications from all relevant sources, including Governments, indigenous people and their communities and organisations, on alleged violations of their human rights\u201d (H.R.C. Res. 6\/12, para. 1(b)) and to \u201cformulate recommendations and proposals on appropriate measures and activities to prevent and remedy violations of [their] human rights\u201d(para. 1(c)).<\/p>\n
In accordance with his mandate, the Special Rapporteur has sent numerous communications to Governments transmitting information received by him of cases of alleged violations of human rights of indigenous peoples or individuals, solicited and in most cases received responses from the Governments, and made relevant observations \u2013 in several cases detailed observations with specific recommendations, all in a spirit of constructive dialogue and cooperation to address problem situations and their underlying causes.<\/p>\n
