Reports indicate that an Indigenous leader, Vicente Fernandes Kaiow\u00e1, was killed, , while several members of the community were injured.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis tragic incident fits a long-standing pattern of violence against Guarani and Kaiow\u00e1 Peoples, a regression on demarcation of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 territories through the marco temporal doctrine and the targeting of Indigenous leaders as a way of terrorising and demoralising communities,\u201d<\/em> the experts, who are currently in Brazil attending the summit said.<\/p>\n<p>They have previously expressed concern to Brazil over the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spcommreports.ohchr.org\/TMResultsBase\/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=27968\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">escalating violence<\/a>\u00a0against Indigenous Peoples and their representatives, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spcommreports.ohchr.org\/TMResultsBase\/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=29192\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lack of effective protection measures<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spcommreports.ohchr.org\/TMResultsBase\/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=25062\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obstacles in the process<\/a>\u00a0of demarcation and titling of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 ancestral territories, as well as modifications in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/spcommreports.ohchr.org\/TMResultsBase\/DownLoadPublicCommunicationFile?gId=30004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">environmental licensing<\/a>\u00a0processes also impacting Indigenous rights<\/p>\n<p>The experts urged the Government of Brazil to immediately ensure the safety and protection of Guarani and Kaiow\u00e1 communities, including through culturally appropriate security measures.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe call upon the authorities of Brazil to conduct prompt, independent and thorough investigations into this attack, and all those previous incidents of violence against Guarani and Kaiow\u00e1 Peoples. Justice should bring accountability to those responsible, provide reparations for victims and their families, and prevent recurrence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhile we acknowledge the acts of declaration of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 lands issued this week, we urge the Government of Brazil to finalise the demarcation of Guarani and Kaiow\u00e1 lands, as well as that of all Indigenous Peoples\u2019 territories, without further delay, in accordance with Brazil\u2019s international human rights obligations,\u201d<\/em> they said. They also reiterated calls for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/en\/press-releases\/2025\/06\/brazil-must-abandon-marco-temporal-doctrine-once-and-all-says-un-expert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">immediate abandonment<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0<em>marco temporal<\/em>\u00a0doctrine.<\/p>\n<p>The experts reiterated that Indigenous Peoples are key guardians of biodiversity and play a vital role in combating climate change. Protecting their rights and territories is essential to achieving global environmental and human rights commitments.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe call upon all sectors of Brazilian society to rally behind the rights and protection of Indigenous Peoples and their ancestral territories.
