The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of Indigenous peoples, James Anaya, visited Colombia from 22 to 27 July 2009 in order to observe the situation of Indigenous peoples in the country in the context of follow-up to the recommendations made by the previous Special Rapporteur, Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen, in his 2004 report (E/CN.4/2005/88/Add.2). This preliminary note presents the initial observations of the Special Rapporteur. A final report, including conclusions and recommendations, will be submitted to the Human Rights Council at a later date.
