The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people conducted an official mission to Australia, at the invitation of the Government, from 17 to 28 August 2009. In the present preliminary report, he provides an overview of his initial observations following the conclusion of the visit. A full report on the situation of indigenous peoples in Australia, with conclusions and recommendations, will be provided by the Special Rapporteur at a later date.
