This report summarizes the communications sent to various Governments between September 2007 and June 2008 concerning allegations of violations of the human rights of indigenous peoples, as well as the responses received. It also underscores the need to strengthen mechanisms for prevention, cooperation and follow-up, and to promote reforms and good practices aimed at ensuring respect for the rights of indigenous peoples.
The report further indicates that the cases examined reveal persistent problems, particularly with regard to lands, territories and natural resources, the lack of adequate consultation, and the protection of indigenous human rights defenders.
