Demarcation, registration and titling of Indigenous Peoples’ lands, territories and resources

By | October 14, 2026

Nearly 20 years after the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the present report examines the legal recognition, demarcation and titling of Indigenous Peoples’ lands, territories and resources, and how their rights are protected when they conflict with competing interests. While important progress has been made in some regions, implementation remains uneven.
The Special Rapporteur calls for urgent action to recognize, demarcate, title and effectively protect Indigenous Peoples’ lands, territories and resources, in accordance with international human rights law.

He calls for a paradigm shift, whereby States would consider Indigenous Peoples to be allies and partners in matters of international security affairs.
